Shai Hope and Hetmyer each scored fifties but couldn’t rescue their side from a heavy defeat.

The Windies boast a long tradition of cricketing excellence and were early pioneers of limited-overs international cricket, winning two World Cups and becoming one of the premier teams worldwide.

A revival in domestic cricket in the Caribbean region and greater investment into youth development also played their part.

Though their team was defeated in this second Test, Australia remains very much alive in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup tournament held in India. They will encounter stiff competition from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh when trying to secure one of three qualifying spots available to them.

West Indies cricket is administered by Cricket West Indies (CWI), an East Hemisphere confederation composed of six independent member states in Jamaica, Guyana, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, Leeward Islands and Windward Islands; these latter three also including three British Overseas Territories: Anguilla Montserrat Saint Kitts & Nevis.

As expected, the Windies completed their series whitewash against India with an emphatic victory on Monday in Dubai. Rahkeem Cornwall’s five-wicket haul highlighted a successful bowling performance, while Chase and Shai Hope put on an amazing stand to push their hosts to an unassailable 3-0 advantage in the series.

While not the strongest West Indies side that will travel to India for World Cup 2019 play-offs proper, many of these players could make an impressionful contribution come September.

On January 22 in Kabul, Afghanistan hosted their final e& Cup T20I series match of 2019. Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bowl first, in an attempt to assess their chasing capabilities prior to next month’s World Cup tournament which begins.

Rashid Khan, Abdullah Ahmadzai and Zia Ur Rahman each picked up two wickets as they reduced Windies to 152/7 from 20 overs – an impressive performance by Rashid Khan’s side who kept pace with Rashid Khan.

Romario Shepherd and Brandon King made their T20I debuts for the West Indies as they struggled to keep up with Afghanistan’s target set for them in this T20I series, yet held their nerve to complete victory 2-1 against Afghanistan and set themselves up nicely for South Africa T20I series which starts later this month.

West Indies vs Afghanistan 4th Test

West Indies completed their series against an emerging Afghanistan side with a comprehensive victory, thanks to an outstanding hundred from Shai Hope and effective bowling by Windies bowlers on a stoppy pitch. Rahmanullah Gurbaz had some eye-catching strokes but Afghanistan failed to post big scores; while West Indian fielders dropped several catches that contributed to their downfall.

Rahkeem Cornwall led all bowlers with an outstanding 10-wicket match haul and was supported by captain Eric Holder who took two more wickets to secure a 3-0 series victory for Caribbean team, the Windies becoming the first nation ever to do so on home turf.

Windies’ performance during this tour also provided them with a good platform in preparation for their participation at the ICC World Cup in India later that year. While not every player travelled down south for that tournament, many got an opportunity to show their worth before heading southward. Windies management and fans were especially delighted by bowler Jerome Taylor’s showing.

With that experience behind them, they hoped for a similar performance against South Africa in an upcoming three-match T20I series.
