Australian Women’s National Cricket Team are internationally-acclaimed. They have won multiple trophies over time – four World Cups, seven ODI World Cups and seven Twenty20 World Cups to name but a few – as well as dominating domestic 50-over and T20 competitions with ease.
As such, they’re one of the top draws in women’s football worldwide. Yet despite this dominance on a global stage, their off-field ranks remain tight-knit; coaches and support staff work tirelessly to enhance both physical and mental strength for this formidable squad.
Before their latest series, we take a closer look at key players of the women’s national cricket team and how they have helped it become such an unstoppable force.
Smriti Mandhana’s record-setting 151-run ton against Australia in the inaugural One Day International was just the latest highlight of her incredible career.
At just 23 years old, Mandhana is now the only woman ever to achieve three ODI centuries consecutively and remains one of its most successful female batsmen ever; all this comes despite having come into cricket relatively late. Her achievement all the more noteworthy considering it comes after beginning early.
Mandhana began her cricketing journey by participating in a grassroots competition hosted by Tasmanian in 1894. Just over 10 years later she would join the inaugural national women’s Test match team despite some significant obstacles along her journey, including an unsettling relationship with Australian Cricket Board officials and numerous failed trials for selection in national teams.
Renuka Thakur and Harmanpreet Kaur have long been revered players on Australia’s women’s national cricket team.
Over their career they amassed numerous caps while contributing to shaping women’s cricket in Australia; so it comes as no surprise that their names are inscribed on the trophy cabinet at national grounds.
As well as these superstars, there’s also an impressive group of young prospects ready to step up and join the senior side. Exposed through WBBL competition and afforded ample training time thanks to increased investment from Cricket Australia, these youngsters have had ample exposure in preparation for joining senior squad.
Their development has contributed greatly to improving women’s game quality while creating an environment in which success can be attained for all; an unstoppable combination that’s likely to remain for some time yet!
