Pakistan made an impressive comeback to score 367 runs. But Australia regained control in the second innings thanks to Adam Zampa and Marcus Stoinis’ efforts.
First innings
Pakistan national cricket team (NPCT) is an Asian nation located on the subcontinent that participates in International Cricket Council test and one-day internationals, overseen by Pakistan Cricket Board in Lahore and representing its people across the globe. Pakistan boasts an illustrious cricketing legacy dating back to ancient history with many memorable matches over its years-long existence.
Pakistan currently ranks number four globally in one-day internationals and eighth worldwide for Twenty20 internationals, and are well known for their aggressive cricket style that often sees them defeat some of the sport’s elite sides. Pakistan has made many ICC tournament finals and boasts formidable batting strength.
Although they fell short in 2017, Pakistan have shown clear signs of improvement under Sarfraz Ahmed. But their batting consistency must improve if they wish to take their sport back up the top level once more.
Though openers Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq made an encouraging start, Pakistan’s batting frailties soon surfaced in the second session as Australia’s pace attack put undue strain on them; Adam Zampa particularly exerted immense pressure.
Australia’s batsmen thrived after lunch, reaching 303/7 in their first innings. David Warner and Mitchell Marsh led by example in scoring 134 runs in the Powerplay to give their side an excellent chance at victory; unfortunately however, they were eventually dismissed for their efforts.
Pakistan’s batsmen struggled with Australia’s spinners as well. Haseebullah Zadran and Khurram Shahzad both failed to make an impression before being dismissed cheaply; ultimately Australia’s bowling proved too good for Pakistan to follow-on and they were forced to follow on after following-on from Australia’s bowling attack.
Pakistan will face Australia in three ODIs and three T20Is starting November 4. They have named 15-man squads for each series that include Babar Azam and Naseem Shah in addition to youngster Amir Jamal and Arafat Minhas in their ODI squads. Mohammad Rizwan will remain out due to rotation policy; giving domestic performers an opportunity for showcase games.
Second innings
Australia and Pakistan’s match was an epic one. Two of the premier cricketing nations in world cricket, their longstanding rivalry spans all formats: 26 Test series, 107 ODIs and 24 T20 Internationals have been played together. This rivalry adds immense excitement for fans around the globe who watch these sports matches between these teams.
Australia quickly took control of their second innings after lunch as both sides struggled to gain momentum during the middle overs, with Mitchell Starc and Adam Zampa’s tight bowling making life difficult for Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq who started well with quick fifties but then fell apart due to scoring rate issues, being dismissed after only 176 runs were scored.
Pakistan were provided an incredible chance to make a comeback, yet their poor shot selection continued to cost them. Glenn Maxwell misjudged a slower bouncer from Zampa and was caught at deep mid-wicket for a duck by Sean Abbott at deep mid-wicket; David Warner missed his regulation chance when attempting to hit over the onside off Zampa and was caught there too by Abbott.
Mohammad Amir struck a devastating blow when he top-edged a pull against Hazlewood to be caught at short third man for 71, sparking a collapse that included Azam, Rizwan, and Usman Khawaja being dismissed in quick succession.
At the close of their innings, Pakistan were all out for 179 and had no hope of recovery. Their bowlers proved too tough a task and once more their batting frailties were highlighted.
With their victory, Australia secured their spot in the semi-final against South Africa and increased their chances of making it all the way to the final. Australia have made history by reaching this stage of competition; reaching their first semi-final is no small achievement; having come through some ups and downs during their campaign, but have always shown plenty of promise as a team with much potential they will look to maintain this success against India next.
Third innings
Players who score more runs in their first innings typically have a greater chance of victory; however, teams which lose control in the middle typically struggle to come back. Pakistan openers Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq both hit quick fifties that seemed likely to give their side an edge; however Marcus Stoinis made his presence felt by bowling an impressive spell; in just his second over, Marcus got Shafique out by throwing out a bouncer that hit Shafique right on his pads, chipped to Maxwell at midwicket for an essential wicket that enabled his team’s victory.
Australia then surged ahead in the final session, with Marsh and Khawaja both scoring half-centuries to put them ahead by quite some distance; yet, their innings was far behind that of India and it is likely a declaration will likely be necessary before play concludes on tomorrow’s fourth day.
On day two, bowlers and fielders put on an amazing display, as Pakistan captain Shan Masood acknowledged competing in Australia is challenging but said discipline was key in leading his team to victory.
Pakistan have an impressive bowling attack, yet their batting has been an area of weakness. The visitors lost seven wickets in their opening session before failing to build on an encouraging start in the second. Pakistan players have failed to capitalize on early successes resulting in poor run of form for them and have experienced an underperforming streak of form as a result.
Pakistan cricket team remain confident despite their loss that their batting can improve in the future. Their roster boasts talented players and can leverage their experience to enhance their batting. But, to do this effectively they need to work on perfecting their techniques and ensure their shots remain consistent over time.
On Friday, November 10, Australia and Pakistan will play their third Test match at Adelaide Oval.
