New Zealand and Australia share one of the fiercest rivalries in world cricket, and this game was no different; both sides battled hard but Australia’s depth both with bat and bowl was too great for New Zealand to overcome.
Glenn Phillips bowled consecutive 10 overs for the New Zealand national cricket team in their timeline match against the Australian men’s cricket team, as New Zealand struggled to cross over.
Timeline
This match between two of the world’s premier teams was an intense competition. Australia had more powerful batting lineups and bowlers were under great strain to overcome any early runs conceded from New Zealand. Though both sides played to a draw, both learned valuable lessons from their performance in this closely fought contest.
New Zealand is an avid cricket nation that has produced some of its greatest players over time. Dubbed the Black Caps, their national team have become known as one of the premier Test and ODI cricketing nations and led by Kane Williamson and Martin Guptill as captains respectively; additionally their formidable bowling unit includes Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins among others.
Australia will look to rebound from their disappointing World Cup showing against New Zealand in this match against them, which may determine if they reach the quarterfinals or not. Australia must overcome a powerful New Zealand side including Kane Williamson and Martin Guptill to do so.
As this Test between New Zealand and Australia begins on a leap day – one of only five matches ever held to start on such an obscure date – it seems fitting. These neighbouring nations may live close, yet have only ever played 60 Tests against one another despite regular tours to India (nine), England (six), South Africa (both eight), West Indies (six) and Pakistan (four). But their lack of interaction makes sense when considering that New Zealand only visits Australia three times every 30 years! Creating an oddly imbalanced relationship in sports.
Preparation
New Zealand will need to perform at their peak if they hope to pull off an upset against Australia in the final match of this T20 series. While New Zealand have an excellent track record against Australia in T20 format cricket, they will need to continue improving to remain an effective threat going forward. Furthermore, this series provides important preparations for next month’s T20 World Cup tournament which both teams hope will start well.
Australia and New Zealand enjoy an excellent relationship across a wide variety of areas, including sports. Yet it remains odd that, since the first official trans-Tasman Test began 78 years ago, Australian cricket has only played half as many matches against New Zealanders than vice versa.
New Zealand are widely-admired for their resilience and resourcefulness when competing in longer formats despite being outmatched. Their team won the inaugural World Test Championship, collected numerous ODI titles and reached four semi-finals and one final during eight T20 appearances – an ethos which led them to victory at both tournaments.
New Zealand have made some key additions to their T20I squad for this T20 International, replacing Tim Southee with Trent Boult while Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell will miss due to injury. Australia have added pace bowler Nathan Ellis and spinner Matt Henry.
This game will be crucial to both sides as the victor will move up in rankings and be in better position to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. Both sides are in form and this should be an intense contest between Pat Cummins, Mitchell Marsh, Steve Smith Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood of Australia versus New Zealand’s talented batting lineup which should give Australian bowlers plenty of difficulty.
Game 1
Australia and New Zealand played out a nail-biting opening game of their three-match series against one another with both sides desperate for victory, in perfect conditions, as both showed outstanding skill and resilience to overcome an initial deficit and win the match. Both will fondly remember this match for years to come.
Australia won the toss and elected to bat first, compiling 300 runs in their first innings against New Zealand bowlers who struggled to contain Tim Southee and Trent Boult’s swing and accuracy while the Kiwi middle order resistance dictated differently.
New Zealand’s top order made the most of their second innings pitch and scored many runs, led by Daryl Mitchell and Kane Williamson’s impressive strokeplay to stabilize New Zealand’s innings – yet their efforts proved futile as Australian bowlers eventually managed to find breakthroughs for New Zealand.
Australia ended up winning by 382 runs and will look forward to competing in Auckland for their remaining two matches, where New Zealand’s batting lineup will be put through its paces.

The second game of the series took place at Auckland’s Eden Park Stadium after a day of rain. Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first under overcast conditions, only for New Zealand bowlers to make an early breakthrough and dismantle India for just 46 runs.
The Black Caps struggled to score meaningful runs early on but were able to recover by picking up early wickets – including that of opener Tim Southee – which helped regain some momentum and bring them back into the match.
Soon, however, they were dealt a blow when Rishabh Pant was run out by Boult after hitting an off-target full toss towards deep midwicket boundary but being saved by Labuschagne’s pinpoint laser throw.
After drinks, the Kiwis maintained their advantage through some brilliant batting from Tom Latham and Devon Conway. Latham played defensive shots against Ravichandran Ashwin while Conway displayed aggressive strokes en route to 37 off 18 overs – leaving their Black Cap opponents trailing on just 14 runs at 59/0 after 14 overs!
Game 3
The third game of the series took place at Melbourne Cricket Ground on a sunny afternoon and promised to be batsmen-friendly, yet accommodating to spinners as well. Both teams expected to produce high-quality cricket. It delivered on its promise as fans witnessed some of the finest players from both sides play world-class cricket! The match delivered, boasting some of the world’s greatest cricketers.
Australia was victorious in this match. Steve Smith’s century proved decisive, while Pat Cummins’ bowling masterclass was one of many highlights for Australia. Though New Zealand managed some big scores against Australia’s powerful attack, their efforts ultimately were in vain.
However, New Zealand did manage to win some matches during this period, including their inaugural Test victory over England in 2021. New Zealand are well known for punching above their weight despite being one of the less populous test-playing nations; having won several trophies, including the inaugural ICC World Cup as well as making four ODI world cups finals.
The Kiwis are looking to move beyond the group stage of this tournament. On Friday they face Sri Lanka – currently leading their group – which could prove crucial in reaching the knockout rounds and avoid defeat in their attempt. Bangladesh and Ireland must both lose to secure passage, while they’ll need to beat Sri Lanka and hope they lose to Bangladesh and Ireland respectively as well as gain ground themselves after disappointing performances in Round 1. If they manage to do that successfully they could put themselves back into contention to challenge for victory!
