Manchester United face Real Betis at San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium in a preseason friendly on Thursday morning, but Erik ten Hag’s side have suffered two injuries to Leny Yoro and Rasmus Hojlund before kick-off, severely impacting their chances.
Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee are yet to join their teammates for their journey across America as they enjoy their summer break, with fans eagerly discussing the potential Manchester United F.C. vs Real Betis lineups.
Man Utd (4-2-3-1): Onana
Manchester United Football Club, commonly referred to as Man United and colloquially as “the Red Devils”, is an English professional football club that currently competes in the Premier League – England’s top division of professional football. Established as Newton Heath LYR in 1878, they became one of England’s most successful clubs in history by winning 20 divisional titles and three European Cup/Champions League crowns since 1878.
Red Devils goalkeeper Andre Onana contributed significantly to their disappointing defensive display during their last match, particularly with an error by Morgan Gibbs-White’s long-range strike and allowed it to fly by him undefended – contributing heavily to their surprising 2-1 loss at home. Onana misjudged Morgan Gibbs-White’s shot by misjudging its trajectory; thus allowing it past him for an own goal that proved decisive in this matchup.
Lindelof
As a central defender, Lindelof is one of the cornerstones of this team. His swift tackles and ability to read the game give them a distinct advantage, often pushing in between midfield players in pursuit of possession wins.
He may not possess the physical presence of a top class centre back, but his mentality and awareness make him an ideal option for this team. Furthermore, he is an excellent passer of the ball.
Casemiro has thrived under his new position, dominating midfield with his passes and winning duels with ease – evidence of Ten Hag’s coaching which has helped bring consistency across defense.
Maguire
Maguire may not enjoy the star status enjoyed by other top-level defenders, yet is still well liked in Manchester United’s dressing room. He’s close with Jonny Evans, Scott McTominay and Diogo Dalot. Growing up in Sheffield’s Mosborough district with both Leeds fans and Sheffield Wednesday supporters as friends has only enhanced this fondness further.
Maguire left Aston Villa’s match against England limping at halftime, and is expected to miss all international break matches for England as a result of further tests to assess his injury, which may keep him sidelined for several weeks.
Maguire began Friday’s 1-0 victory against Fulham and registered five clearances, three interceptions, and one block. While Maguire will likely face stiff competition for minutes from Matthijs de Ligt and other central defenders throughout the season, for now he remains as starting center back.
Amass
Pre-season has proven that our left back is one of the stars, as he has impressed greatly down his left flank while showing impressive ball control skills. He looks poised to play more often at the heart of our defence next season.
He still needs work defensively, conceding against Arsenal and making mistakes from time to time. A solid performance against Betis may earn him more playing time in the team.
Matthijs de Ligt will start at centre-back alongside Jonny Evans while new signing Riccardo Calafiori should make his debut at right wing back. Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee could make appearances as the club wraps up their US tour; Leny Yoro and Ibrahim Sangare continue their rehabilitation from injuries.
Casemiro
Casemiro appears to have recovered from the muscle strain sustained during last weekend’s FA Cup win against Liverpool, and should retain his starting spot alongside Toby Collyer at centre midfield. Manchester United young stars Scott McTominay and Jadon Sancho may join him to form an attacking trio along with Amad Diallo and Mason Mount.
The Red Devils will be without Rasmus Hojlund and Leny Yoro as both are still recovering from injuries, while new signings Diogo Dalot and Joshua Zirkzee cannot feature due to being unavailable due to prior commitments.
Betis will miss a number of players due to international tournaments, with Ayoze Perez, German Pezzella and Johnny Cardoso away on international duty. But their squad remains balanced between youth and experience led by goalkeeper Adrian and veterans Juanmi, Pablo Fornals and Romain Perraud.
Collyer
Manchester United should have enough firepower to defeat Real Betis at Snapdragon Stadium in pre-season despite their slow start. Erik ten Hag will look to strengthen a defense that has seen key figures depart such as Leny Yoro to Lille and Joshua Zirkzee to Bologna.
Toby Collyer has been an outstanding performer in midfield for the Red Devils this summer and will start in their starting XI. A strong presence, he possesses excellent positional intelligence, athleticism and the versatility needed to play as both No 6 or No 10 positions.
Hector Bellerin and Jadon Sancho should return to the starting XI for Arsenal but Isco will miss out. Real Betis are missing Ayoze Perez, German Pezzella and Johnny Cardoso as they compete internationally while Abdessamad Ezzalzouli and Juan Miranda are away on club business.
Diallo
After making an impactful sub appearance last time out, Diallo will look to continue his recent run by starting on the right flank this time out. He has not only been an invaluable presence for this season’s side but his versatility will also prove vital when considering our attacking options.
Diallo’s impressive performances under Ten Hag have increased his chances of earning regular starting status at Old Trafford. As someone with multiple positions of playability, Diallo could potentially give Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford some competition for starting spots at Old Trafford.
The 22-year-old has made himself indispensable to this team through his ability to both create in the half spaces and get forward for goals. His unwavering dedication has proven that he can play an essential role in its success.
Mount
Ruben Amorim’s first game as United manager sees Mason Mount gain his debut and Christian Eriksen, Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay are also fit. Mount is one of several players highlighted by Ten Hag as having all of the attributes necessary for him without possessing the ball; he can press well, move midfield quickly and has two-footedness that Ten Hag has prioritized in players he wishes would come off the bench more often.
Rasmus Hojlund and Leny Yoro both suffered injuries against Arsenal, meaning they will miss this matchup. Diogo Dalot and Joshua Zirkzee have yet to join the squad, while Kobbie Mainoo, Antony, Manuel Ugarte and Alejandro Garnacho remain on holiday; Ayoze Perez, German Pezzella and Johnny Cardoso will also not play due to international tournaments.
Sancho
Sancho cost United an initial 85 million euros when they signed him in 2021 and has not made his debut for them since appearing as a substitute against Leicester City in the Premier League on Dec. 15. He could start in this Europa League match though.
He will likely play as a right-sided winger, just as he did during his previous loan stint at Dortmund where he netted two assists and six key passes during four games before suffering injury.
Southgate showed his trust in Leny Yoro by giving him his debut appearance for England against Czech Republic, setting up Raheem Sterling for England’s opening goal and providing another assist during a 5-0 qualifying win over them. Yoro may receive his second assist against Betis while Leny Yoro makes his first matchday squad appearance with Manchester United replacing Lisandro Martinez and Kobbie Mainoo who are suspended.
Rashford
Rashford has spent much of this season operating on the left wing, despite his natural preference lying elsewhere. However, his effectiveness in this position has come into question and with Jadon Sancho’s arrival it could be time for Rashford to switch back into his preferred central midfield role.
Rashford hasn’t taken this change negatively; in fact, his shot creativity has actually increased during games where United has controlled possession.
But he could use some extra help up front, which is why it would be nice for him to partner with someone who can offer more depth in attack – perhaps Joshua Zirkzee could fill that role if Amorim decides to play him up front alongside Fernandes and Garnacho; it should create space for them both to create chances together.
