The Scorecard is a Game of Emotions
At an emotional match that has seen its share of thrills and spills, The Oval’s final session has truly come alive with drama and power – from Shubman Gill’s maiden ton to Mohammed Siraj’s stump-crushing yorker it has all been an exhilarating display of both power and theatre.
Even while England lost wickets at regular intervals, their lower order kept up a fight and prevented India from running away with the game. Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope were dismissed quickly in quick succession; however Harry Brook and Joe Root held firm at either end to keep up the struggle and maintain momentum for England.
Akash Deep made the final breakthrough, trapping Brook lbw for an early wicket to create an opening to England’s collapse, followed by their tail’s capitulation, leaving them in an extremely precarious position.
India then capitalised on England’s collapse to strike back and make their presence felt with Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja both making tons, Jadeja’s being particularly remarkable, coming off just 109 balls; Sundar’s more measured century came off just 107 deliveries.
India eventually reached 259/7 and secured a lead of 170 over England. India finally broke their Edgbaston curse as they won this india national cricket team vs england cricket team match scorecard Test match!
Harmanpreet Kaur then collected India’s series-win trophy as they left the pitch, marking India’s maiden bilateral win against England women’s cricket and setting them up to continue their winning run in three ODI series that begin July 16 in Southampton.
Shubman Gill is then presented with the Player of the Series award by England coaches. As everyone watches him collect his medal and bottle of champagne he praises both teams’ efforts during this remarkable series while adding that captaincy becomes much simpler with players such as Siraj and Prasidh Krishna present in your side.
The Impact of the First Innings
Scorecards tell more than just numbers when it comes to match results; they portray emotions, pressure and the memories made during an important game. The first innings lays the groundwork for all subsequent innings – if batsmen fail to make an impressionful opening inning start then their team could struggle later on; but with patience and hard-fought battles they always stand a chance of winning!
No matter whether India bats or bowls, the opening innings has a profound effect on their game. If their openers can make an excellent start and accelerate scoring rates quickly enough to put pressure on bowlers; but if top order collapses quickly it becomes nearly impossible for middle and lower orders to form strong partnerships and produce impressive scores.
India took control of the first day with outstanding batting performances from their youngsters, led by Akash Deep who scored an inspiring fifty and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s brilliant 118 before his family, while captain Rohit Sharma reached 10,000 ODI runs. England kept faltering but eventually suffered another blow when Chris Woakes went down with dislocated shoulder.
But India’s bowlers remained dedicated and disciplined; Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja in particular kept England at bay with disciplined bowling from Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja keeping tight control in the middle overs. Mohammed Siraj’s brilliant spell saw Jamie Overton and Smith removed, with Gus Atkinson remaining calm while Prasidh Krishna also chipping in with some crucial wickets to set up an exciting finale.
At one point, India seemed in danger of falling short; however, their team battled back through superb batting from Moeen Ali and Jos Buttler as well as Gill’s incredible dive to save an important boundary. England made mistakes on defense — including two dropped catches — which proved costly in the end.
The Story of the Match
Mohammed Siraj delivered an unforgettable performance as India defeated England by six runs to take the fifth and final Test series 2-2. From nerve-jangling starts to stump-crushing yorkers, Siraj won India the match in style. With five wickets taken over his final spell he secured India a win that will live long in the memory.
Rohit Sharma: India put forth one of its best performances ever this time around. All squad members put forth effort, which eventually paid off. Rohit is very pleased with how things have turned out and hopes to keep on doing great work with team.
Jos Buttler: India outclassed us today, especially in the first innings where we allowed them to open up an early lead of around 20 runs and then in the second, were caught short with our partnership a little too quickly. Would have liked to hold out for a draw, but unfortunately missed multiple chances. Needs to focus on both positives as well as improving on weaknesses.
Ben Stokes: Overall we played very well but ultimately lost some momentum at the end. While no match is an easy one for anyone involved, had there been more overs we might have been able to finish off our opponents sooner. Says his team has learned much from this and are more prepared than ever going into their next contests.
Akash Deep: Another wicket for the Indian spinner! Jos Buttler is dismissed for 17 and sent into the slips to be dismissed, sparking wild cheers from the crowd. Shortly afterwards, India bowlers take over, producing another double-wicket maiden which leaves England at 351/6 and 20 runs off their target despite Gus Atkinson hitting Siraj for six briefly boosting spirits before India once more takes control.
The Final Score
After an exciting and long day of cricket, India finished strong to seal their win in the third Test against England at Edgbaston and secure an equal standing series 2-2. Edgbaston isn’t known as an easy wicket for visiting teams, making this victory all the sweeter as their victory kept pressure on England’s home side until its last few overs – an attack-minded Indian attack proved too strong to resist against.
India began their day on an uncertain footing after losing Virat Kohli early, yet never gave up hope. Rohit Sharma made a solid start before Suryakumar Yadav assisted him in reaching double figures. Together they increased the run rate considerably as English spinners struggled to contain them.
Mohammed Siraj struck three wickets in two overs to put England into deep distress. He claimed both Harry Brook and Jamie Overton for just 21 runs – leaving England on 339/6 still 20 short of target. Gus Atkinson briefly lifted spirits by hitting Siraj for six off him, only for it soon afterwards to fall lbw, leaving this match hanging by a thread.
But Jadeja wasn’t done and finished his innings with an enormous four off Josh Tongue to send India and its fans into a frenzy of celebration. Next week in Manchester is their chance to secure the series before their fifth Test begins in Bangalore.
Edgbaston was an exciting contest from start to finish and England could have easily come out victorious had they had more luck in the field – they were dropped twice on Day 2, with Bumrah denied his expected five wicket haul and Bumrah’s attempt at a fifer being turned back due to poor fielding practices which proved costly for England.
Tammy Beaumont was delighted with how her team battled in such difficult conditions, particularly the bowling performance and fielding improvement needed in terms of Shafali Verma and Charlie Dean; yet acknowledged they may not be amongst the finest fielding sides worldwide.
