Coventry City
Coventry City have endured almost 25 years since their relegation to League Two and groundshare arrangement with two neighbouring clubs; since that time they have struggled for success despite repeated promotions to Premiership play-off spots. But this FA Cup semi-final at Wembley feels like their moment for glory to finally arrive – yet in reality they may need another season before celebrating an eventual return to top flight football.
United’s lack of focus and urgency during the first half will leave Erik ten Hag with some hard questions to answer. They took some time settling in but once they did they looked comfortable enough to build up a three goal advantage thanks to goals scored by Scott McTominay, Harry Maguire, and Bruno Fernandes.
Victor Torp looked to have won it for Coventry during extra time, only for his close-range effort to be disallowed for offside. A brilliant counter attack from Coventry then saw both Antony and Amad Diallo come close to scoring on multiple occasions.
As time ticked away, nerves began to fray among Coventry fans as time wound down, prompting an encore performance of The Enemy’s 2007 single We’ll Live and Die in These Towns as an emotional reminder of all they had endured over recent months, witnessing once-great club struggle with league one survival.
Manchester United
Manchester United have won 13 out of 15 matches against Coventry City across all competitions, without suffering a single defeat at Wembley Stadium – they will look to add yet another triumphant win against local rivals during this quarter-final tie.
Victor Torp’s late goal being disallowed due to a technical offside decision has now concluded the match and we will enter extra time at Wembley. Mark Robins made two substitutions, bringing in Josh Eccles and Callum O’Hare for Kasey Palmer and Victor Torp respectively.
After an action-packed first half in which both teams shared several chances, the second period has been significantly calmer as both squads work to defend their respective leads. A slick move through the middle involving Marcus Rashford ended in him being flagged offside despite looking good.
At Wembley Stadium, it has been an eventful extra 30 minutes. Bruno Fernandes for the Red Devils rattles the crossbar before Haji Wright sees a header hit against it while an estimated 36,000 fans watch on from behind their screens.
Casemiro kicks the first penalty kick but misses, saving Bradley Collins’ chipped attempt. Rasmus Hojlund then takes and sends his shot past Collins – Manchester United are heading towards an FA Cup Final appearance for 22nd time; two more than any other team! If they advance past this hurdle and win at home they would become first team since 2003/04 to reach consecutive finals since 2003/04 and 2004/05! Victory would give them an additional edge towards title contention as it would mark consecutive home wins this competition.
Goals
After both teams failed to find a winner through 120 minutes, penalties were required in order to settle it. Haji Wright beat United’s defence before setting up Victor Torp on the outskirts of the box who finished nicely but his goal was disallowed for offside; much like last season’s final. As such, this match would go to shootout.
Casemiro got United off to an unfortunate start when his effort was saved by Bradley Collins. Diogo Dalot, Christian Eriksen and Fernandes all scored as United took control. Callum O’Hare and Wright both tried their luck but both shots were saved by Onana; Ben Sheaf then scored before Rasmus Hojlund held his nerve to take Ten Hag’s side into the final next month.
Coventry City were without Gregg Berhalter after he suffered an ankle injury in their 2-2 draw at Sunderland on 9 November and were missing strikers Jonny Evans and Tyrell Malacia as they fell nine points outside the play-off places with two matches remaining. Rhys Carr still had captain and club top scorer Ben Sheaf in contention as well as goalkeeper Oliver Dovin who had been an unused sub at Stadium of Light.
The Sky Blues have won just one of their past 10 league matches against Burnley (D3 L3), drawing three and losing three. But they’ve never experienced defeat at home against them!
