India vs Bangladesh
As they opened Day 4, Bangladesh overnight bats captain Najmul Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan showed great application in surviving India bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj’s early assault, although their total was reduced to 26-2 at one stage of Day 4. But once Ravichandran Ashwin came on after drinks break, Bangladesh quickly tumbled from 26-2 to 149-6 within no time at all, due to his toe-crushing yorker which castled Taskin Ahmed and Akash Deep and Ravindra Jadeja picked up two wickets fast thereafter leaving Bangladesh close to disaster!
FOUR! Shubman Gill hits his first boundary of the innings by sweeping Jadeja to move past 200 runs.
Jadeja takes his second wicket with an off-pace full delivery that surprises Shanto off guard. Siraj lands an intrusive length that Shanto attempts to defend but can’t keep under. Shanto then attempts a sweep but misses, leading to him being caught at slip for 20 runs.
Litton Das scores his third four of the innings by pushing a ball towards midwicket for four, but soon afterwards Rishabh Pant’s loud appeal for a catch against Shakib is called into question by what appears to be contact on Shakib’s helmet; therefore it was ruled out and Shakib left with 22 runs scored.
Day 1
Bangladesh and Australia came out swinging when they met on the opening day of the Test at Chepauk, both teams determined to claim victory in an anticipated battle of high intensity. Najmul Hossain Shanto of Bangladesh won the toss and decided to bowl first.
India made an early inroad into Bangladesh’s batsmen on a pitch which favoured spinners, forcing Bangladesh into early defensive collapse on an otherwise slow deck. At first it appeared as though their batsmen might struggle to recover as they found themselves caught chasing runs on a slow deck; but Mominul Haque and Shakib Al Hasan fought back resolutely until eventually they were bowled out for just 149 runs.
Bangladesh were not able to capitalize on their good start as their lower order were caught playing reckless shots that were punished by Indian bowlers like Mohammad Shami who picked up five wickets during this innings. Tawhid Hridoy did his best for Bangladesh with an outstanding unbeaten 82 from within four overs, but even this couldn’t save them from defeat.
Indian batsmen fought back strongly, with Yashasvi Jaiswal (56) and Rishabh Pant (39) adding an impressive 195-run stand for the seventh wicket to give India an unexpectedly strong advantage at 240/6 before Bangladesh’s Hasan Mahmud took three wickets quickly in quick succession leaving them reeling at 241/2 before Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja kept their nerves intact to post a magnificent 201-run partnership which helped India take command. Ashwin reached his sixth Test century while Jadeja finished unbeaten on 83 not out as India finished Day Six with 339/6, leaving their opponents behind.
Day 2
Due to rainfall halting play in Kanpur, Day 2 of India vs Bangladesh Test match has been cancelled and both teams have returned to their hotels.
As soon as the field was saturated with rainwater and all covers remained secure, play had to be stopped immediately. After consulting with their umpires and hearing their assessment of the situation, play was officially suspended until further notice.
Hasan Mahmud stunned India’s top order with his five-wicket haul in India and for Bangladesh overall. Taskin Ahmed and Litton Das have followed him with four wickets each while Yudhajit Guha, Chetan Sharma and Hardik Raj have each provided a wicket.
Rohit attempts to flick the ball from his pads but gets an unfortunate leading edge into third slip’s hands, forcing the umpire to hesitate before raising his finger and giving Kohli his first wicket of the innings. Kohli had started off confidently and was now well in control of the situation.
Jasprit Bumrah tore through Bangladesh’s middle order with ease, sending shockwaves through their ranks. Their captain tried to play an inside edge shot but was caught behind by Litton Das.
SKY starts his innings off right by hitting a SIX off his first delivery and quickly follows it with another boundary off his second. He appears in good form. Suryakumar Yadav joins at three and they have built up a partnership of 122/1 in 9 overs so far; both batsmen will look to carry on this excellent performance from their predecessors. SKY looks poised for more runs to continue his good performance.
Day 3
Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill both made brilliant double centuries to help India amass 515 on day three at Chepauk, while Jasprit Bumrah took 4/50 to seal victory as Bangladesh were dismissed for just 149 runs to cede a 227 run lead to India.
Bangladesh openers Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan made an aggressive start, adding 62 runs before both were dismissed by R Ashwin shortly thereafter. Their lower order tried hard, but was ultimately unable to match India’s total; Najmul Hossain Shanto ended his innings not out at 82 not out and Shakib Al Hasan unbeaten on 45 respectively.
Bangladesh are still facing an uphill task chasing 515 runs to win and have lost four wickets over the last hour; however, captain Shanto is doing all he can to keep them in contention.
Bangladesh suffered another setback as Ravichandran Ashwin made his mark by striking first with captain Shanto. Mushfiqur Rahim gave an edge off his bat that KL Rahul held onto for mid-on.
Day 4
Bangladesh and India clashed in their inaugural Test at Chennai and ended with India scoring an emphatic 280-run win. Ravichandran Ashwin made short work of Bangladesh’s bowlers alongside Ravindra Jadeja – helping India take control of the game in the second innings. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto put up an admirable fight, but did not receive much assistance from his teammates.
At 158-4, they faced an insurmountable target of 515 on an overcast day and resumed their chase at 158-4, but they managed to make some ground in their fight with Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan putting up strong resistance in the first session before losing wickets regularly and giving way.
India’s bowlers dominated the second session, with Bumrah taking early wickets to begin dismantling Bangladesh’s innings and Shanto being bowled by his paceman with an excellent delivery by Bumrah for just 21 runs, ending his impressive innings – as well as Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das’ 75-run partnership keeping the scoreboard moving along nicely.
Bangladesh still have hope of reaching their winning run, even after losing six wickets on Day 4. They need to bat out the remaining hours and form more partnerships if they hope to avoid defeat.
