Joburg Super Kings vs Durban’s Super Giants
Durban Super Giants captain Keshav Maharaj will look to end their SA20 2025 campaign on a high note against JSK at Johannesburg’s iconic Wanderers Stadium on March 12.
Faf du Plessis’ team had an inauspicious start to their tournament campaign and their recent loss to Pretoria Capitals effectively put an end to any playoff hopes they might have held onto.
So far, the team’s batting has struggled, scoring only one century score from nine matches played so far. On the bright side, their bowling has been impressive with fast bowlers Noor Ahmad and Keshav Maharaj providing an ideal platform for their middle order to flourish.
The match will take place on a pitch known as ‘The Bullring,’ which has proved ideal for fast bowlers while giving spinners ample opportunities for extracting turn and bounce. The game is scheduled to start at 9:00 PM IST on February 1, with coverage provided by Sports18 in India, Sony Sports Network in South Africa as well as Jio TV, Disney+ Hotstar FanCode Voot SonyLIV online streaming platforms as soon as it begins – we will post links here as soon as the match commences!
Predictions
The Super Kings are coming off an exhilarating victory against Durban Dolphins and are hoping to maintain this momentum into this match against Super Giants. Quinton de Kock will look to score another big innings, helping his side reach a competitive total while their bowlers must step up to contain their opponent’s high-powered batting lineup.
Durban’s Super Giants come into this match after two consecutive defeats against Pretoria Capitals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape, so will need Keshav Maharaj’s squad to perform at its best if they hope to avoid another loss and advance into the tournament’s final.
This match will take place at Kingsmead and should provide ample batting opportunities. Both sides boast strong batting lineups that should score quickly; powerplay should see both sides scoring over 10 runs per over.
Both teams boast potent bowling attacks, making it hard to predict who will come out on top in this crucial encounter. At home, the Super Kings hold an advantage and will look to win this crucial encounter to secure their place in the final of SA20 tournament.
Faf du Plessis’s men feature an experienced batting lineup in Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen, alongside Wiaan Mulder who can play a pivotal role. Their bowlers include left-arm spinner Noor Ahmad who could help limit the Super Kings batting attack; other bowling threats are Sibonelo Makhanya, Wihan Lubbe, Moeen Ali and David Wiese who could all pick up wickets under pressure situations; these will all be led by captain Du Plessis who could prove decisive!
Match Summary
Durban Super Giants won their inaugural and final match of the season to end on an impressive note, beating Super Kings by 11 runs in Gqeberha. This win vaults them up into third place on the log and they will now face Sunrisers Eastern Cape in an Eliminator matchup.
Heinrich Klaasen was in impressive form for Super Kings as he scored an unbeaten 76 off 47 balls to set up an aggressive total and become the first player in this competition to cross 1000 runs. Wiaan Mulder provided solid support as they built an important partnership. While Super Kings bowlers did well during middle overs with Hardus Viljoen taking two wickets, Super Kings’ death overs bowlers unfortunately leaked critical runs that cost them this match.
Super Kings’ chase began strongly, with opener Leus du Plooy hitting a boundary off their opening ball – only for them to be taken down by Noor Ahmad’s superb left-arm chinaman delivery, leaving them in trouble and dismissing captain Faf du Plessis and Wihan Lubbe in one over to completely transform the course of this contest.
Dwaine Pretorius took over for the final over and nearly pulled off an unlikely victory thanks to Donovan Ferreira’s powerful hitting, but eventually was out for 51 off 22 balls when his target proved too great. Unfortunately though he seemed in considerable discomfort following that shot and so the physio was called onto the pitch to check whether he could continue.
Unfortunately for him though it appears he has tweaked his back which could affect him in future matches and could become an issue during playoffs should specialist assessments not take place soon enough.
Key Moments
Joburg Super Kings will face Durban Super Giants at Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on November 8. The pitch should favour fast bowlers but spinners may also find success extracting turn and bounce. Dubbed “The Bullring,” this venue promises an entertaining T20 matchup.
On February 1 at 9.00 PM IST, both teams will compete to secure a playoff berth and both are expected to come out fighting. The Super Kings have been particularly impressive at home this season with Leus du Plooy leading an effective batting lineup while Lutho Sipamla and veteran Imran Tahir spearhead an attack-minded bowling attack.
Durban Super Giants have struggled mightily since entering this year’s tournament. After suffering defeat after defeat and washing outs, they currently find themselves at the bottom of the table. Yet despite this dismal record they hope to end it on a positive note against JSK – Noor Ahmad and Keshav Maharaj having been their standout performers this season.
JSK began aggressively and were at 31/1 after just 3.1 overs before rain fell. Moeen Ali then took control with both bat and ball, taking two important wickets while JSK struggled to keep pace, though Heinrich Klaasen’s fighting fifty gave some optimism to JSK’s middle order.
The Super Kings’ excellent fielding saved 10-15 runs, which was an enormous factor in T20 cricket. Unfortunately, Giants batsmen weren’t up to par and their innings collapsed under pressure.
JSK narrowly defeated Durban Super Giants at Wanderers by 11 runs through DLS to seal fourth-place in Group Stage and set them up for an Eliminator match against Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Heinrich Klaasen made 76 not out and Wiaan Mulder 30 not out en route to 173/4. Despite Donovan Ferreira’s 51 off 22 balls, Pretorius ensured DSG lost by just one run, giving an exhilarating end to an otherwise disappointing campaign.
