After an extended rain delay, the game finally began! Namibia Merwe Erasmus won the coin flip and elected to bowl first.
FOUR! Bairstow reverse sweeps this over midwicket for four.
David Wiese will replace Nikolaas Davin on the team, and both must perform effectively if their sides want a chance of winning in the England cricket team vs Namibia national cricket team match scorecard showdown.
England – Jos Buttler (c), Phil Salt (wk), Adil Rashid (wk), Jonny Bairstow (wk), Sam Curran (wk), Chris Jordan (wk)
England kept their hopes alive of reaching the Super 8 stage on Saturday by defeating Namibia by 41 runs in Antigua. Jos Buttler’s men lost the toss and looked set to be overwhelmed, having slumped from 13-2 after losing four wickets early on, before Harry Brook and Jonny Bairstow joined forces for an unbeaten stand of 56 to steady proceedings before English batsmen struck sixes against Namibia’s teenage pace bowlers.
No matter that the rain-affected game was reduced from 11 overs per side to just 10, England’s batsmen still put up an excellent performance as they set about reaching an unlikely target. Opener Phil Salt fell for four ball duck after trying to sweep fast bowler Bumrah but his slower ball crashed into his stumps instead; but Yorkshireman Jonny Bairstow soon joined Phil Salt at the crease forming an important partnership of 56, both hitting sixes throughout their innings.
England was in no danger of reaching their 183 target when their captain was caught behind off-spinner Harbhajan Singh with just three runs on the board, yet their hosts’ inability to keep him under control compounded their woes. Singh spun two overs for 12 runs while off-spinner Moeen Ali and youngster Jack Brassell each took one wicket as England were reduced to 155-5 innings total.
Rob Key, England’s director of cricket, expressed confidence in his side even as they risk being sent packing at the group stage after an underwhelming start to their campaign. “They have shown tremendous character throughout what has been an extremely challenging Group A,” Key told Sky Sports.
England players and coaching staff gathered together with fans at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium for national anthems before each match at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. Each team then entered with an urgency knowing a loss would end their tournament participation.
Namibia – Michael van Lingen (wk), Nikolaas Davin (wk), Jofra Archer (wk), David Wiese (wk)
England have further strengthened their claim for entry into the Super Eight stage with a decisive 41-run victory against Namibia at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in their final group game. Following an inauspicious start, when Jos Buttler was dismissed for just six runs, Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali shared an unbroken stand of 75 runs before Liam Livingstone delivered another stellar innings ensuring England reached their target with five overs remaining.
Jordan had taken immediate control of the match from the opening over, dismissing Michael van Lingen for 11 and then cutting their run rate back down to 27-3 when Jofra Archer was removed in the sixth over from Jofra’s attack by Jordan with an outstanding diving catch at long-on. It would have been unfair not to give Jofra another chance in his final national team appearance before Jordan dismissed him by dismissing him off an over.
FOUR! He finds the gap. Squaring up on middle, Van Lingen takes his eyes off it before hitting this over the fence for four.
Full! In the arc and out of the park. Timed perfectly by Rashid, this fuller-on off is hit hard over long-on for a massive six!
England have emerged victorious after two wins out of three matches, while Scotland and South Africa also secured early wins. England must beat Scotland in their final match before hoping that either Australia or New Zealand lose by less than the required margin.
Since 1992, the Namibia national cricket team has represented their country internationally in cricket competition. Managed by Cricket Namibia and nicknamed ‘Eagles’ by fans and opponents alike, this side is an associate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Namibia made their ICC T20 World Cup debut at the 2022 tournament and finished as runners-up, recording 17 points. Since then, increased investment from the ICC and more focused programs have seen Namibia quickly rise up the rankings of T20I cricket.
Namibia are currently eighth in the latest ICC T20I Rankings and have secured second spot among African teams, being led by former Zimbabwe wicketkeeper Heath Streak as their coach. They boast an average of 127.33 and strike rate of 147.44; playing against all five current Big 5 nations with only one loss; they play their home fixtures at Wanderers Stadium located in Windhoek; also home of Namibia Rugby Union as a multipurpose sports facility that hosts football, rugby, concerts and other events.
Brief scores
After an extended rain delay and some questionable umpiring decisions, England put up a fight but ultimately fell short at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. Jos Buttler and Phil Salt both fell within the powerplay period while David Wiese’s impressive 12-ball 27 could never provide Namibia any chance at claiming this group game victory. Sam Curran and Chris Jordan played well for England but it was Jofra Archer who wrapped it all up professionally to secure another win for England this tournament.
Michael van Lingen b Jofra Archer
Jofra Archer throws an off-break that spins away and hits batman square on his back pad; however, they cannot get their foot inside in time and the ball sails past deep midwicket fielder for four runs.
