Turkey
Vincenzo Montella has chosen Merih Demiral and Abdulkerim Bardakci from their Euro 2024 opener against Georgia as starting defenders while Hakan Calhanoglu from their Euro 2024 opening match could start up front on the right wing for Turkey against Georgia. Real Madrid playmaker Arda Guler could also make an appearance from right wing, looking to add to his 18 goals scored from 86 caps with Crescent Stars.
Turkey were one of many pundits’ highly coveted outsiders in last summer’s tournament, yet have fallen off the radar somewhat heading into this summer’s competition. Still, they will hope to make an impressionful run and a win against Germany on Tuesday would provide them with an ideal platform from which to do just that.
Montella has decided to keep faith with his starting eleven from their 1-0 first leg win against Austria, even though Enes Unal, Caglar Soyuncu and Ozan Kabak all are no longer available for selection.
Turkey have only managed to beat Georgia four out of six times they’ve met so far (D1 L1) in all competitions (W4 D2). But they should feel confident entering Dortmund thanks to the return of Samet Akaydin and Orkun Kokcu to their starting lineups, along with Napoli forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia as they aim to make an immediate impression with Dortmund as hosts.
As we near the halfway mark, and as the crowd has begun to thin out, excitement levels have begun to dip significantly. Sure, there’s been the occasional boot on the ball but for the most part there hasn’t been much happening that makes headlines.
Georgia fans’ initial excitement over qualifying for their inaugural major tournament has subsided somewhat, yet plenty of passion remains present. Georgia is well organised and capable of frustrating teams; perhaps even surprising them with an upset or two!
After an initially quiet period, Georgia’s Kvaratskhelia comes close with an overhead kick that just misses. Soon afterwards, he exchanges passes with Tsitaishvili down the left flank before entering the box but his half-cross/half-shot attempt was easily blocked by Gunok.
Another quiet spell reveals signs that players have begun to tire. Tension is rising inside the Westfalenstadion as its atmosphere becomes increasingly charged.
