Julian Sayin
Julian Sayin, a sophomore, will make his Ohio State Buckeyes debut as starting center this season. With one of the highest rankings in college athletics and Sayin playing an integral role, they could maintain that status through his performance.
Sayin was raised in Carlsbad, California, and attended Carlsbad High School. At Carlsbad he played quarterback for the Lancers – leading them to win a state title as quarterback – as well as excelling on defense with numerous awards and honors received throughout his time there.
After an unscored first quarter, Texas took advantage of an Ohio State penalty to drive to their 40-yard line before missing their field goal attempt and eventually punting.
On their next drive, Sayin connected with Carnell Tate down the left side for a 40-yard touchdown to give Ohio State a 14-0 advantage with just over two minutes left in the third quarter. Later in the fourth quarter, Sayin connected with Jeremiah Smith for another touchdown pass from 41 yards out, giving OSU even greater dominance of this matchup.
Texas gained possession with 2:36 left but its drive proved frustrating for Arch Manning and his struggling offense. Manning attempted to hit Parker Livingstone in the end zone but Lorenze Styles deftly deflected his pass; Sonny Styles then returned it for another touchdown score.
Texas fell short in their second-half efforts and lost due to a late interception from Buckeye safety Chase Young, but nonetheless their defense looked strong under new head coach Steve Sarkisian. Despite losing their opener, Texas made an impressionful first impression under Steve.
Defense was led by both veteran players such as junior Cole Brevard and Hero Kanu at tackle positions; freshman Troy Williams played center; and sophomore Trey Moore and Liona Lefau played weakside linebacker positions. The 2024 team will feature several stars, and offense will be led by sophomore quarterback Julian Sayin.

Ohio State’s defense was dominant against No. 1 Texas in their 2024 national championship rematch and showed they have what it takes to compete for another title run in 2025 with an impressive 14-7 win – their first against an unranked team since beating Miami back in 1988! Texas starting quarterback Arch Manning struggled mightily, going only 3-of-5 for 13 yards passing in his debut performance for Texas.
CJ Donaldson took advantage of an early kickoff and ran for a 6-yard gain, setting off Ohio State’s initial scoring drive of the game. Unfortunately, that drive came to an abrupt halt after Texas defense forced James Peoples into fumbling at his 45 and recovered it there.
In the second quarter, Ohio State began dominating with an array of big plays from Julian Sayin. First he connected with Jeremiah Smith on a 6-yard touchdown pass before finding Max Klare for an 11-yard score to give them a 14-3 edge over Texas Texans late in half; however, Jermaine Mathews foiled another fourth-down conversion attempt when his pass to Sonny Styles was intercepted by Jermaine Mathews who made an interception play and ultimately gave Ohio State control.
Once they returned from halftime, Ohio State scored again; Sayin found Klare again for another 4-yard touchdown pass to increase their lead to 21-3 with just five minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Nick Bosa of Ohio State set off their final scoring drive of the game with an efficient sack, leading to their ultimate triumph and making their statement against reigning national champions, UNC. It marked Ohio State’s inaugural win of 2018-19 season and marked an important statement win against them.
Ryan Day led Ohio State to an 18-1 regular-season nonconference record under Ryan Day and four consecutive victories over No.1 Texas in their rivalry, extending Ohio State’s longest winning streak ever against Texas to nine-4 overall and 10 straight victories at Columbus where 12 of 14 meetings in this series had previously been won – both previous meeting this season included.

Ohio Stadium saw Julian Sayin make his first start at quarterback and connect with Carnell Tate for a 40-yard touchdown strike to give Big Ten champions an impressive 14-7 win against No. 1 Texas in their season opener at Ohio Stadium. Sayin, a five-star prospect and top passer in 2025, completed 13 of 20 passes for 126 yards with running back CJ Donaldson gaining six receptions for 67 yards each on offense while Davison Igbinosun recorded 10 tackles and one sack on defense.
Longhorns started off the second half with the ball but had to settle for a punt after Arch Manning ran for three yards on their opening play of Arch Manning 3 yard run. Ohio State took advantage of an offensive facemask penalty by James Peoples with 2-yard run to reach Texas 18 before Sayin completed Smith pass deep into Texas territory before stopping short on fourth down, turning over ball on downs.
After the break, Texas twice advanced into Ohio State’s 10-yard line before being stopped on fourth down by Jermaine Mathews Jr.’s outstanding fourth-down stop that almost resulted in an interception. Ohio State managed to prevent Texas from reaching their end zone until the final minutes and ran out the clock before Texas could score again.
After an inauspicious start to 2018, Ohio State has emerged as a top contender to challenge for another national title. They’ll get another opportunity this Saturday against Grambling State at Ohio Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
