Tight Ends
Denver maintained their unbeaten road record this season by dominating Oakland Raiders on both sides of the ball, scoring on their opening drive and never looking back. Meanwhile, Denver limited Oakland to just eight first-half yards across four drives and Marvin Mims Jr. recorded his first punt return touchdown while rookie running back RJ Harvey recorded his fifth 100-yard game of 2018.
The Broncos opened with a 14-play, 81-yard drive that consumed nearly nine minutes of clock. In response, the Raiders utilized 14 plays over 91 yards to move downfield and score on Geno Smith’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Brock Bowers. Field goals would then exchange hands until Wil Lutz scored his 23-yard field goal that secured victory for Denver.
This performance from the Raiders marked their worst offensive output of 2023 and dealt a significant blow to their playoff chances. Furthermore, it marked their most points allowed per game this season. Meanwhile, Denver clinched AFC West and set up a first-round matchup against either San Francisco 49ers or Houston Texans as a result.
Nik Bonitto and John Franklin-Myers each recorded two sacks to give the Broncos an overwhelming 14 1/2 sack advantage over the Raiders in this matchup. Raiders backup quarterback Kenny Pickett was also taken down on three occasions.
This was the 113th meeting between these teams; Denver has won 63 of them so far, including seven straight at Invesco Field at Mile High. While Oakland won their most recent meeting against Denver back in 2016, since then they’ve lost seven out of 11 divisional games – this loss at home being their first loss against divisional opponent since 2016. Their season now sits at 6-6 after falling to Eagles victory against Redskins; as a result they were knocked from playoff contention after Eagles win against Redskins victory on Sunday; after losing tiebreaker with Patriots they too were officially out from postseason contention due to this loss resulting from losing 7 divisional games during 2017!
Wide Receivers
Since NFL merger in 1970, these teams have met 133 times (including two postseason matches). Of those meetings, the Raiders have won 73 times outright; these matchups remain among the most frequent between AFC West rivals.
Denver was in complete control throughout this contest, thanks to its dominant rushing attack. Denver amassed 152 rushing yards – the most since Week 8. Additionally, three touchdown drives lasting more than 10 minutes helped control the clock and tip the time-of-possession battle in their favor.
Rookie running back Juwan Thompson continued his impressive season by scoring a 100-yard touchdown run, while wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders also scored his own touchdown run and crossed 1,000 receiving yards for the first time ever in his career.
Denver’s defense was similarly impressive, forcing four turnovers and recording five sacks. Nik Bonitto and John Franklin-Myers each recorded one sack while safety Malcolm Roach intercepted Raiders quarterback Derek Carr three times for pickoffs.
The Broncos made several roster moves before their game against the Colts on Sunday, including moving Marcedes Lewis from their practice squad onto their active roster and waiving Garret Wallow from their depth chart (as of December 2). Below is their current 53-man depth chart as of December 2.
Running Backs
RJ Harvey was instrumental in Denver’s ball-control offense, amassing 75 yards on 17 carries and six receptions while scoring three times in the second quarter – his 3-yard touchdown being the game-changer and giving Denver an 11-2 lead at that point. Marvin Mims Jr’s 48-yard punt return capped an opening drive which held possession for more than nine minutes and 45 seconds!
Nik Bonitto continued his impressive play by tallying two sacks, moving him closer to breaking Von Miller’s franchise record of pass rushingers that Von ran from 2014-2021. In addition, Maxx Crosby registered one sack and two tackles for loss for over 25 total for the year, as well as recovering one fumble and scoring two field goals!
Linebackers
After their 24-17 victory against the Raiders at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday, the Broncos have one step closer to clinching a playoff berth. Denver completely controlled Sunday’s matchup from start to finish, dominating time of possession and restricting Raiders run game with Marvin Mims Jr’s touchdown being key in turning this one-sided affair in Denver’s favor. But that only revealed half of Denver’s dominance – it truly was impressive!
The Raiders’ offensive difficulties were compounded by defensive errors on their first drive. After failing to convert on third down and being sacked on fourth, they had no option but to punt their opening drive before scoring their opening touchdown. Once Denver scored again, two subsequent drives saw over 100-yard rushers contribute significantly towards increasing time of possession in favor of Denver.
RJ Harvey played an integral part in Denver’s win, rushing for over 100 yards and setting a team record with his ninth touchdown rushing of the year. Meanwhile, their defense shined, with Nik Bonitto, John Franklin-Myers, and Malcolm Roach all recording sacks.
The Broncos released their depth chart prior to this game and there were no major adjustments since last week’s matchup. One notable change was Marcedes Lewis being promoted from practice squad member to active roster status; this allowed for defensive tackle Garret Wallow’s release and allowed room for Marcedes Lewis’ inclusion on active roster roster.
